Doors, doors and more doors
Our house has 9 interior doors. All 9 doors are solid cedar wood frames with nice wood panels. The problem was that these doors had been painted. Many, many coats of paint. the paint on the doors much like everything else around this house was peeling. So this summer I started a project, the first one I planned to see from start to finish without Paul’s help. I started stripping the paint off the doors soon after summer vacation started. I could only work on a few doors at a time since I knew it was going to take several days each door and we still needed privacy around here, since Daniel was here visiting. A few doors at a time I worked with different types of stripper and started peeling years of bad paint. I was working against heat and sun out on the driveway, but I was able to work on several doors at a time. The problem was if it was supposed to rain I had to pack everything up. I finally moved into the garage, but I could only work on one door at a time. I also finally had to ask for Paul’s help. He found me some better tools and offered suggestions, and most importantly he created a tool to scrape the paint off the detail on the doors. The heat, and other project around the house took my attention away from the doors for a while. Then Ashley came home and school started, but I was starting to hang doors again. Some of my earlier doors had mistakes while I was still learning.
Well it has taken 5 months, a lot longer then anyone ever thought. But finally all the paint is stripped off 8 of the 9 doors. 6 of the 9 doors are hanging where they belong with their hardware, including the hinge bumpers, new hinges, and new beautiful door knobs. The 2 doors that missing from that last count are actually being sanded again and getting one final coat of urethane to fix the mistakes I made the first time. Those 2 doors will be hanging where they belong by tomorrow. Since school is quickly approaching for me, I have no choice but to push very hard this weekend and get the last door stripped and finished. I am truly looking forward to finally marking this project with a done stamp. Of course as this project is coming to an end, I am already planning several more to take it’s place. We really need to work on the trim and casing around all these beautiful doors we have.
