The best and worst part of my day
I have made it through the first 3 days of school… The best part of my day is 2:30 i the afternoon getting in my jeep and driving to Ashley’s school. I walk into her school and to her class room where I get to talk to her teacher and get a direct report on her day, then we jump in the jeep and start our day! Yesterday we were able to go to the library and a few stores before coming home and making a great complete dinner, rather then microwaving something like we did far too often last year. Today when we get home we are going for a walk, Ashley wants us to walk the dog everyday.
For me however, this was day 3 of dropping off my bus after my route so the mechanics can balance the front tires, and replace a headlamp. Everyday I wake up at 4 a.m. to go into the office, I have to be there at 5 a.m. so I can find out if my bus has been fixed or ignored yet again. This is starting to take it’s toll on me, I could truly use the extra hour of sleep I am supposed to get by not having to drive all the way to base. The repairs my bus needs are not difficult, they are not even enough to make the bus dangerous to drive, however they can damage the vehicle the longer it is driven in it’s current condition and most of all it’s annoying!
I have learned some interesting information about the union vote. The union that is trying to organize the drivers is the Teamsters union. In Minnesota the union we were fighting was the SEIU, and they had some underhanded tactics. They couldn’t win a vote however so they decided to find a bigger wallet to team up with. The Teamsters being a much bigger and more recognizable union is winning more then loosing. With all that being said, even though they are winning they are winning is places where each employee has the right to decide if they want to join or not. Georgia is one of those states where employees can choose not to join the union even if the union is present. That being said at least I won’t have to quit my job because of the union. I am currently handing out anti-union literature to drivers to try and get the word out to these people that the union can promise the moon and the stars, however nothing is a guarantee. Can we as drivers really afford to pay someone else’s salary? That’s basicly what union dues would be doing.

Very interesting blog, Coral. Looks like you can stand up for yourself. Is someone helping you produce the anti-union literature so that you can put your side of the story across?
